Good oral hygiene helps prevent cavities, toothaches, and gum disease. A clean mouth also keeps your breath fresh and your teeth white. Here are five tips to help you brush up.

KNOW THE SIGNS OF A HEALTHY MOUTH

Fresh breath, pink gums that don’t hurt or bleed during brushing, and teeth free from plaque and debris are signs of good oral health.

USE THE RIGHT TOOLS

Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush. Replace it every two to three months or whenever you notice frayed bristles. Use toothpaste that contains fluoride, which helps prevent tooth decay.

HONE YOUR BRUSHING TECHNIQUE

Your toothbrush should make a 45-degree angle with your teeth. Use short strokes and be sure to clean every surface. Don’t forget to brush your tongue for fresher breath.

AVOID HARMFUL HABITS

Minimize your intake of sugary foods and drinks. Chew sugar-free gum and choose water or milk instead of soda or fruit juice. Avoid smoking, as tobacco can cause mouth odor, tooth staining and oral cancer.

KNOW WHEN TO SEE A DENTIST

In addition to regular exams, you should visit your dentist if you notice signs of serious mouth trouble. This includes red, swollen or bleeding gums, tooth sensitivity to temperature changes, and a lingering bad taste.
Taking care of your mouth will set you up for a lifetime of healthy teeth and sparkling smiles. Visit Neon Northeast Ohio Neighborhood Health Services, Inc. in Cleveland for more information on good oral hygiene habits and other health services.
